5 Signs a Fence Post Is Rotting at the Base

You push on a post, and it gives more than it should, or the top rail sways more than you remember from last year. Something below the soil line has changed. Wood does not rot all at once, and by the time a problem shows above ground, the part you cannot see is usually further along than the part you can.

One rotted post rarely means the entire line needs to come out. Posts fail at different rates depending on which one sat in wetter soil, caught runoff from a downspout, or simply had a knot or weak spot in the original wood. Replacing the one or two posts actually showing decay, while the rest of the line still tests sound, is usually the more practical path.
The calculation changes when the rot is not isolated.
